Strange Adventures (3rd Series)
(Vertigo, 1999-2000)
DC revived an old favorite with this Vertigo mini-series, presenting short stories that are alternately creepy, amusing, and bizarre, but always strange. They hired a number of well-known creators, too, including John Tottleben, Joe R. Lansdale, and Richard Corben, to name but a few. And then, they evidently gave them free rein to do whatever they want, which is why you’ll get an incredibly disparate array of yarns in each issue.
In one story, “The Split,” a clock-maker harbors idle thoughts of violence toward his wife, and then a bolt of lightning brings those wishes to life, in the form of a shadowy creature with a wrench that goes maniacally off to realize them. In another, “Metal Fatigue,” a freelance explorer leads a team of robots to the center of the earth, learning about “giants in the earth,” humanity’s predecessors, and the price of greed. Other tales deal with sex, morbid humor, and other such subject matter. Strange indeed.
