Amazing Heroes

Amazing Heroes was the most successful super-hero comics fanzine of the 80s. Published by Fantagraphics Books, Amazing Heroes was considered to be the fiercely independent company’s sole concession to the mainstream. Amazing Heroes often covered—and championed—Marvel and DC products that Fantagraphics’ flagship title The Comics Journal eventually distanced itself from and openly despised. Although its focus was on super-heroes, Amazing Heroes always provided space for articles about other genres and more esoteric fare, introducing fans to once-unknown creators such as Neil Gaiman, Paul Chadwick, and Mark Millar. It also launched the career of comic-book writer Mark Waid. In the early 90s, Amazing Heroes received heavy competition from the glossy newcomer Wizard, whose price guides helped to propel the speculation boom in which collectors, not fans, temporarily had dominion on sales. Amazing Heroes kept its values, black-and-white pages, and mature, in-depth reviews intact, but its audience had eroded, forcing Fantagraphics to cease publication.
