The Spectre (2nd Series)

The Spectre was one of the most intriguing characters of the Golden Age of comics. He first appeared in More Fun Comics #52 in 1940, later materializing in All Star Comics where he became a member of the Justice Society. He seemed to vanish with the end of the Golden Age, reappearing in 1965’s Showcase #60 and later starring in his own title, The Spectre (1st Series), a title which introduced the remarkable comic artist Neal Adams in issue #2. Nevertheless, that series lasted only ten issues, after which the Spectre virtually went into hiding.

In 1987, he returned in this, his second self-titled series. His spirit had been languishing in the vortex as punishment for his failure to live up to the responsibilities that his godlike powers entailed. Then, the universe decided on another fate for him. In greatly diminished form, he was sent back to Earth—landing in the parlor of Madame Xanadu—and tasked with meting out punishment to evildoers.
