No Man’s Land

    (Tundra, 1992)
™ and ©1992 George Pratt

Having finished up Enemy Ace: War Idyll, artist George Pratt gathered the sketches he had used to train his eye toward that era into this powerful collection. Pratt includes both pencil sketches and monotypes (pressed imprints of oil paintings), which he uses to illustrate both the quiet and the nightmarish moments of life in the trenches. These are accompanied by quotes and verse from the era, including one that sums up the incredible tragedy of that conflict well:

“Pressed close against each other
The dead without hatred or flag
The hair stiff with congealed blood
The dead are all on one side”

— René Arcos, “The Dead”
