In Europe, there were many regional conflicts that led to World War II. One that has receded into history was the Spanish Civil War, where the fascist Franco enlisted the help of Hitler’s Nazi Germany to crush the left. Against this backdrop, the saga of Max Friedman continues. Immersing himself in the final days of this fight, he searches for his friend Guido Treves who has been lost in the chaos.

War is hell. Or maybe hell is the task of interpreting ongoing confusion. Posing as a journalist, Max accompanies the Belgian reporter Claire to travel to the front. Along the way, they witness the equal havoc that enemy bombing of civilians in towns and soldiers on bridges can wreak. The cause of the leftists is in doubt, however, as they are outgunned by the emerging Axis. Meanwhile the trail of Treves grows ever colder …

Italian Vittorio Giardino distinctly portrays the range of emotions and circumstances that ordinary people find themselves thrust into while their society tears itself apart. The nuances of the political subplot, character relationships, and geographic movements may not register well with new readers. But anyone can appreciate how this creator has carefully reconstructed the painful spasms that war produces, so that we may avoid the same fate in the future.
