Menthu (2nd Series)
(Black Inc, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Black Inc
After finding this new series, I recalled reading the first four-issue volume of Menthu in 1998. I was then intrigued by the interesting combination of mythology and modernity, but I am even more impressed with this new volume, which retells Menthu’s origins.
Menthu is Rashan N’Shanga, a young man who discovers that he may be more than a man—he may, in fact, be a god, son of an Egyptian god of old. The first four issues cover his quest to discover the truth, his acceptance of what he truly is, and his difficulties fitting in with the rest of his pantheon. The art is good and distinctive, with strong details and lush colors. The story is engaging and includes action, adventure, mystery, and enough politicking to go around. And each issue, though built on the prior, still has plenty of self-contained action to please even casual readers.
It’s to be hoped that, this time around, Menthu will get a solid following to keep the series going. In time Menthu may deserve a spot in the comics pantheon among such other gods of comics as Thor, Hercules, and Oh My Goddess.
