Tom & Jerry (Vol. 2)

Although perhaps best known for their many cartoons, Tom & Jerry have been causing trouble for each other in comic books since 1942 in Our Gang with Tom & Jerry #1. After 60 issues, this officially became Tom & Jerry Comics and enjoyed a long run into the 1980’s.

This second volume featured lead stories by Oscar Martin, but also reprinted stories about other characters by the legendary Carl Barks, best known for his work on Disney’s Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge. The plots follow a basic formula: Tom the Cat is always trying to catch Jerry the Mouse, but clever Jerry always outwits simple-minded Tom, often by causing Tom’s own plans to backfire. Of course, the odds are stacked in Jerry’s favor a little. Later stories (and the cartoons as well) give Jerry a sidekick, another mouse named Tuffy, and they both often enlist the help of the neighborhood bulldog.
