By 2017, mankind has settled Mars, although the society there behaves, at best, like a cattle town in the Old West. To protect the settlers, the government created Phantom Guard, a collection of operatives—many with superpowers—charged with preserving the peace against unusual threats. Their numbers include Bypass, an experienced field officer and team leader; Dyson, the team’s sniper; Serge, a superhuman who can control his adrenaline to temporarily gain great strength and speed; Mhkinot, a superstrong alien; Gauge, a cyborg; Napalm, a martial art master; Maze, a psychically powerful illusionist; and Freeburn, the most powerful team member who has the ability to channel solar power into a heat weapon.
