Jay & Silent Bob

This four-issue mini-series stars the loudmouthed stoner, Jay, and his quiet compatriot, Silent Bob, along with other characters from Kevin Smith’s movies. Smith, who plays Silent Bob in his movies, is a comic book aficionado who made a name for himself with offbeat independent movies such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. These low-budget, very funny films used cinema verité stylings to tell the tales of various teens living in suburban New Jersey. While the production was often rough, the films scored points for their memorable (and often bizarre) characters, including a teenaged “sex researcher,” a bored video store clerk who will do almost anything at work but his job, assorted perverts, stoners, and slackers, and (of course) a couple of struggling comic artists.

Jay and Silent Bob made their debut in Clerks, and reappeared in subsequent films as walk-ons. The two are so legendary that even in the world of the comic and movies, they have their own comic book!
