Satyr

Satyr takes place on two levels. The framing sequence, which is the springboard for the continuing storyline, takes place on the island of the satyrs, but in modern times. (This is evident from many references to New York City.) The flashback is a retelling of the classical story of Odysseus and the Cyclops. (The flashback sequence would appear to be a reprint from some other source, judging from the words “The End” in the middle of the story.)

Satyr was written and illustrated by Mike Indovina. Thumbs up for his talents in both areas. The art is fun and light-hearted, with plenty of clever sight gags. One particularly enjoyable device involves satyrs outside the panels who comment on or interact with the action within. The dialogue has a pleasant meter to it, as well as a fair amount of punnery. The cyclops Polyphemus, for example, mocks Odysseus by calling him “Oh, dis I is!”

While black and white, the tones employed give the art depth. Sadly, the issue is printed on inferior newsprint paper, which detracts from the total package. It’s to be hoped that future issues will be able to use physical materials equal in quality to the contents.
