Unearthly Spectaculars
(Harvey, 1965-1967)
™ and ©1965 Harvey Comic Publications
When this series was published in 1966, Harvey’s chief offerings consisted of such cartoon favorites as Casper, the friendly ghost, and Little Dot. Intentionally or not, they seem to have brought the same sense of silliness to their mystery/super-hero line of “Harvey Thrillers.”
Unearthly Spectaculars ran for just three issues, featuring a collection of unlikely heroes such as Miracles, Inc. and the Three Rocketeers. By far the most memorable (and silly) of the lot was James Flynn, a.k.a. Jack Quick Frost. Flynn, a secret agent, had been dumped into the waters off Iceland by the bad guys, and became frozen in an iceberg. He was later released by atomic testing in the area, and discovered that the atomic blast had mixed up his body chemistry, turning him into a being of intense cold. Able to fire “cold blasts” at enemies, he nevertheless lives in fear of melting and must remain in specially refrigerated quarters when not out on a mission.
