Ragman is Rory Regan, a Viet Nam veteran who runs a pawn shop by day, but becomes a crimefighter by night. In the original telling of his origin, Rory’s father discovered two million dollars in mob cash stuffed inside a mattress someone had pawned at his store. Before he could enjoy the fruits of this discovery, the “owner” of the mattress came to reclaim it. As one might expect, the loot was the result of mob activity—and the criminals wanted it back.

Just as the mattress’s owner came to collect it, he was shot down by criminal associates who then proceeded to torture Rory’s father and elderly friends with live electrical wires. Rory appeared on the scene and attempted to pull his father from the wires. Unfortunately, he was grounded, so when he touched his father, the electricity surged through them, leaving everyone dead except for Rory. Rory then discovered a suit of rags his father had thrown together as a costume, and decided to strike back at the mobsters.
