Jim (Vol. 2)

The title of this series derives from its creator, Jim Woodring. As an alternative comic, Jim stretches the bounds of comprehensibility with seemingly stream-of-consciousness stories filled with oddball characters.

Typical among these is the opener for Jim’s second series entitled, “Manhog Beyond the Face.” The story begins with a creature called “Manhog” trying to kill a bird for lunch. He succeeds in wounding the bird with a rock, but loses it when it runs into a drainpipe. Manhog chases after it, running straight into the pipe, whereupon he has a series of bizarre hallucinations. Later, while still dopey, Manhog decides to skin his own leg and paint it silver, mimicking a broken trophy he saw. It all ends when his “friend” Frank (the cute cartoon animal from the cover of issue #1) brains him on the head with a paddle, fairly exploding his head and returning Manhog to normalcy.
