Following on the heels of the successful movie comes the English translation of the Chinese comics adaptation of the novels by Wang Du Lu. Actually, the Ang Lee flick depicted the fourth installment of the five-book series, so now ComicsOne is publishing Vols. 3 (prequel), 4, and 5 (sequel) but — instead — calling them 1, 2, and 3.

Travel back again to medieval China, where the heroic Li Mu Bai (as portrayed by Chow Yun Fat) and the fetching Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) show off their martial-arts prowess against other kung fu wannabes but tragically hide their burning affection for each other. And get the lowdown on the Green Destiny Sword, which was the object of all the serial robbery by the lithe Zhang Zhi in the film.

Illustrations by Andy Seto are typically colorful and dizzying, as rendered in the elaborate Hong Kong action genre with which ComicsOne has flooded the U.S. market. The story is both familiar yet more detailed than one could reasonably remember, which makes this title a more accessible entry point for new readers of the Chinese manga style.
