On a hot summer night in 1966, an itinerant laborer with a long history of petty crimes finally committed the ultimate offense, guaranteeing his notoriety for decades to come. On July 14, 1966 Richard Speck terrorized, assaulted and raped nine student nurses in Chicago, brutally murdering eight of the women before the night was over. For two days the police were hot on Speck’s trail, but always remained hours behind. They got lucky on the 16th, when Speck botched a suicide attempt.

This biography spans Speck’s entire life, from his childhood to his final years in prison. The weeks and days prior to the killings are described in detail, as well as the police investigation and trial, where he was sentenced to jail time totaling over 400 years. Speck was repeatedly denied parole during the next 25 years, and finally died of a heart attack on December 6, 1991, only one day before his fiftieth birthday.
