Insomnia

This second book in the Ignatz series from Fantagraphic Books follows the same laconic, contemplative example set by its predecessor, Baobab. Mysterious by virtue of declining to explain itself to the reader, Insomnia juxtaposes a vignette about a pair of convicts working on a chain gang with a shady bookkeper’s vague dealings in a sketchy Mexican border town. Writer/artist Matt Boersma’s murky ink washes complement the story’s murky narrative. More dreamlike and impressionistic than Baobab, Insomnia benefits from an edgy, almost film noir-like, aesthetic vibe.
