Young Master

This was a very nice samurai adventure series in the style of a Kurosawa film. The title character is a wandering ronin (masterless samurai) whose appearance acts as a catalyst for events as much as he is directly involved. In one well-executed story, the young master simply walks into a town, preceded by his own legend as a swordsman. Corrupt officials, gamblers, and errant lovers all assumed that he was there to seek vengeance on them. This triggers a sea of bloodshed as the different guilty parties go to war with each other. Only after the last body hits the ground is it revealed that the ronin was merely coming to town to rest. All the people who’d just killed each other were strangers to him.

The series features work by Larry Hama (Wolverine), Chuck Dixon (Batman), and Val Mayerik (Savage Sword of Conan). All in all, Young Master is an approachable, action-filled series.
