The Ghouly Boys
(Slave Labor, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Christopher
This story of a young boy who suffers a terrible accident and is then resurrected by his voodoo-practicing mother is a lot lighter than it sounds. The whimsical story of Zombie Boy and his best friend Fat Bat—especially the first chapter of Zombie Boy’s story told in rhyming verse—is reminiscent of director Tim Burton’s early drawings and cartoons. The story of the childhood outsider is universal and this rendition of the old “boy and his dog” mythos is classic and enjoyable. SLG is known for its offbeat yet heartening stories (read Andi Watson’s Skeleton Key) and Ghouly Boys is much in line with that individualist aesthetic.
