Manga Darkchylde

Gone from this all–ages reinterpretation of Randy Queen’s character is the sexiness that made the original Darkchylde series known as a “bad girl” book. This incarnation features Ariel Chylde as a younger girl drawn in the “big eyes” manga style. The 14–page zero issue story contains the same creepy monsters from the original, but other elements are completely different. Also included is a seven–page preview of #1.

Queen’s dynamic pencils are still ever–present and the coloring by newcomer Sarah Oates particularly stands out. The only element that detracts from the story is certain bits of the dialogue. An all–ages interpretation should be written at a level that can be understood by readers of all ages. This story contains dialogue and narration by a young girl, but contains vocabulary that not many children this age would know.

Overall, this new version stands a real good chance of drawing fans of the original series back into the fold while finding a new audience with those drawn to this art style.
