Concrete: Think Like a Mountain

    (Dark Horse, 1996-1997)
™ and ©1996 Paul Chadwick

Uncommon in its quality and uncompromising in its principles, Paul Chadwick’s Concrete has become one of the most popular “prestige” comic titles of the 1990s. In the 6–part “Think Like a Mountain” mini–series, the stone–faced but lovable Concrete and a band of Earth First! Activists attempt to prevent the logging of an ancient forest in the Pacific Northwest. “Think Like a Mountain” thoughtfully explores environmental activism, civil disobedience, and the high cost of living according to one’s ideals.

Chadwick is a superb graphic storyteller who carefully balances plot, characterization, and heavy duty political propaganda while avoiding the kind of self–righteous tedium that usually results when comics self–consciously tackle important issues. Geoff Darrow’s detail–rich covers round out the high quality package from Dark Horse.
