Purge (Amara)
(Amara, 1995)
™ and ®1995 AMARA Incorporated
Purge began its run with the now defunct ANIA Comics, a group of African American comic creators who banded together to publish Afrocentric stories. However, the creators of Purge jumped ship after their first issue in favor of self-publishing. Under their new name of Amara, Purge began anew.
The series featured the title character, a successful businessman, who felt an uncontrollable desire to return to his old neighborhood and help where the police couldn’t. As Purge, he could fight crime as he felt it should be fought—at the criminals’ own level. Purge felt that the only lessons that criminals could learn were violent ones. He used a souped-up motorcycle for transportation and was an expert in hand-to-hand combat.
Purge was created by Roosevelt Pitt Jr., and premiered in July of 1995.
