Man-Bat (2nd Series)

™ and ©1984 DC Comics

In the early 70s, a new generation of creators restored Batman from the 1960s campy TV star to his original stature as Dark Knight of Gotham. For the 400th issue of Detective Comics, writer Frank Robbins and artists Neal Adams and Dick Giordano created a macabre menace known as the Man-Bat—a scientist transformed into a giant bat creature through an experiment gone awry. Not really a villain, Man-Bat was a tragic figure torn between savage animal instincts and remaining traces of humanity. His early conflicts with Batman, reprinted in this 1980s one-shot, are some of the highlights of Batman’s 60-year history. Man-Bat also starred in his own short-lived title in the 1970s (Man-Bat (1st Series)) and in backup stories in Batman Family. He has appeared sporadically in the DC universe to the present day.
