Spawn the Impaler
(Image, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Todd McFarlane Productions, Inc.
The second major spinoff from Spawn introduces another hellspawn—this one based apparently on Vlad the Impaler, the bloodthirsty monarch of Wallachia. Like Al Simmons, this ’spawn was a warrior whose fierce love for his wife gave him the impetus to make a deal with the devil. In most lore, Vlad is the basis of Dracula, so it’s actually a pleasant change of pace to see him as something more than a vampire. Mike Grell (Green Lantern) does his usual fine job with the script, and the painted art by Rob Brior adds a strange, photo-realistic look to the series. In the end, however, it seems more driven by McFarlane’s ambitions as a toy manufacturer (the Impaler model was one of several Spawn variants introduced at the time) than by any real story need.
