Kyle Baker is an incredible — and sometimes underappreciated — writer-artist. From such graphic novels as I Die at Midnight, King David, and Why I Hate Saturn to such collaborations as Truth: Red, White & Black and Birth of a Nation to his Kyle Baker Cartoonist collections, his work is instantly identifiable and entertaining. Baker was the best possible choice to meet the challenge of transmuting Jack Cole’s Golden Age Plastic Man for today’s audiences, and he began this series with a story arc that provided Plastic Man’s origin and background that accommodates both the version that has been the comedy relief for today’s Justice League of America and the qualities that made Cole’s character a classic. Following #7’s adequate but unexceptional fill-in, Baker returned, opening with a takeoff of the Alex Ross-Paul Dini graphic novels that made it clear Baker hadn’t begun to run out of ideas. While hilarious details reward informed adult readers, the stories and art are clear and goofy enough to entertain audiences new and old. The 10th issue stands alone, for those who want a sample before hunting for back issues.
