Wimmen’s Comix

(From The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

Created by the San Francisco Women’s Comics Collective, this was a follow-up to It Ain’t Me Babe, the first women’s underground comic; it was designed as an ongoing anthology title to help women get published in the often violently misogynistic world of underground comix. The initial run of Wimmen’s often featured immature and amateurish work, but it also gave folks like Trina Robbins, Lee Marrs, Roberta Gregory, Melinda Gebbie, and Sharon Rudahl greater exposure (in some cases their debut) and consolidated their progress.

When Wimmen’s Comix returned in 1982, several former mainstays were still present, but new contributors appeared—Lee Binswanger, Leslie Ewing, Mary Fleener, Leslie Sternbergh, and Julie Hollings—and the standard was higher. Theme issues appeared, international contributors were invited…even the occasional male was allowed to be an ancillary contributor, provided a woman was doing most of the work!

On average, since 1982, Wimmen’s (Wimmin’s since #17) has averaged an issue about every eighteen months. The Supernatural issue #13, “Disastrous Relationships” issue #14, and “Men” theme issue #16, are probably the best overall to date, the latter including an outrageously horny “Desert Peach” vignette by Donna Barr. ~HS
