Captain Greedy

Part anthology, part clubhouse newsletter, part marketing pamphlet, Captain Greedy really doesn’t fit into any of those categories. This collection of stories about Captain Greedy—a.k.a. Geoffrey Patterson, owner of Geoffrey’s Comics in Gardena, California—dawdles in self–deprecating, blue humor, but rarely succeeds at it thanks to a mostly unbroken string of amateur art and writing. Jun Gokeu and Vinny Navarrete’s contribution provides the best reading in both humor and art. Lines like “That’s no way to talk about broads!” and “I saved your life, you worthless &!+(#!” knock out some actual comedic beats amid a chain of homage shots that would probably be better left alone instead of hammered home with verbal cues. The rest of the book, especially the fumetti section, is admirably enthusiastic about comics, but mostly unfunny, even when not preoccupied with speculation about Patterson’s crotch size.
