Marge Buell, creator of the protofeminist bad girl Little Lulu for slick magazines in the 1920s, eventually developed an entire franchise of spinoffs that took place in the same skewed kidworld as Lulu. One of the most successful of these was Tubby, the earnest fat kid who was often the brunt of Little Lulu’s mischief. In the hands of gifted humorist and storyteller John Stanley, Tubby’s misadventures in pursuit of dignity, acceptance, and understanding among his goofy peers were both very funny and extremely touching.

The pages of Marge’s Tubby comics also featured second-string kid characters like Alvin, the little know-it-all, and Gloria, an ill-tempered and stuck-up girl who also served as the nemesis to Little Lulu.
