Waterdogs

Well, there’s nothing like a few waterlogged babes in bikinis to grab the average comic reader’s attention. And Waterdogs has bikini babes a’plenty. Which won’t be objectionable to many potential readers, but it’s too bad Dyer and Laufman couldn’t have thought of something a little more original to enhance the story a bit.

Ah yes, the story? A moderately clichéd but otherwise inoffensive tale about a group of operatives trying to locate pieces of an ancient artifact (are there any other kind?) that are expectedly scattered around the world. The writers demonstrate elements of good storytelling, but not great. There are no surprises or suspense to elevate the excitement beyond the level shown on page one.

Ditto for Laufman and Purcell’s art. It’s pretty typical fare not unlike one would find in any issue of Uncanny X-Men, but lacks any kind of unique flair or pizzazz. The entire creative team, though, gets points nonetheless for at least adhering to the basics, a feat that all too often is left unaccomplished in many small-press efforts.
