OK, how many times have we all seen the following: A once-great city, now in ruins? A lone little girl wandering about with a teddy bear? A warmongering general? And of course, a generic super–hero? Don’t answer that. Because creator Dave Morello already knows that calling the above ideas clichés is a cliché in itself. So he doesn’t even try to reinvent them. Instead, like MacGyver using Lego blocks to build a lawnmower, he uses these cardboard, pre–fab elements to craft a remarkably clever and surprising story about the insanities of politics and revolution. Morello takes an uncommon approach by building his story at a system level, rather than a component level, like an electronica artist who composes new music with bits and pieces of old. Similarly, his art takes on that same paint–by–numbers quality by cleverly using limited shades of greytones. It’s a technique that could only work on a book like this. Morello is an unusual talent who brings freshness to stale ideas.
