My Life

“I am in love with a boy who hardly notices me. Will he think I am very bold if I call him?” For the (1940s-style) answer to this and other burning questions, as well as some gritty, emotionally violent, and downright mean confession-oriented tales of love lost and found, turn to Fox Feature Syndicate’s series, My Life.

In its short run, My Life managed to draw the attention of comics censor Fredric Wertham, who cited the series for its indecency and poor family values in his book Seduction of the Innocent. My Life’s answer to the above question, by the way, is “I’ve never known a man who liked to be chased by a girl. Men like to do all the chasing.” In like fashion, women who strayed outside the lines by displaying initiative, ability, or emotional sophistication were frequently the villains in these stories.
