The Secret Agent from Gold Key was based on the quirky British television series starring Patrick McGoohan that aired in the mid-1960s. McGoohan played John Drake, a James Bond type who had more intellectual depth and moral ambiguity than the average super-spy, and whose adventures tended to be equal parts of social/political commentary and action. The sequel to the Secret Agent series, The Prisoner, became a cult favorite by focussing even more on the ambiguities and moral dilemmas of espionage.

The comic book adaptation took a more straight-ahead approach, with action-oriented stories and plots that were easy to follow and read in a minimum number of pages. The standard Gold Key format of photo cover and anonymous, workmanlike interior art predominated.
