Captain America: Drug War

In a stab at creating socially relevant comics, this one-shot tells two stories of Captain America fighting the evils of street drugs.

The first story, “High Heat,” by Peter David and Sal Velluto, doesn’t exactly face the issues of drug abuse by teenagers head on. Instead, the villains are space aliens who are trying to control the earth by introducing drugs to American teens. Cap confronts a high-school baseball pitcher who just can’t deal with the pressure of winning, so he readily accepts his alien pusher. In the second story, “Drug Lords” by George Caragonne with some rare mainstream super-hero art by Colleen Doran, Cap teams up with the youthful heroes the New Warriors. The theme is the same, youth hooked on drugs, except this time the abusers are an alien super-hero team and a young dancer. This story too portrays aliens as the evil drug protagonists instead of human criminals.
