Don Winslow of the Navy (2nd Series)

Having already appeared as the hero of a radio adventure series, a comic strip, and comic books from Merwil Publishing and Dell, Don Winslow of the Navy earned a place in the Fawcett Publications’ stable of characters in 1943, the same year he also appeared in a popular movie serial. The World War II years were probably the most exciting for this title. Still, the post-war years saw Winslow saving the lives of young cadets and opposing the sinister plots of—at the time—modern-day pirates like the seductively evil Singapore Sal.

Fawcett Publications delivered a well-crafted, well-written comic featuring longer stories and crisp artwork, plus photo covers on later issues. The title later petered out when it fell into the hands of Charlton Comics after Fawcett bowed out of the comics business to focus on paperback sales.
