Space War

    (Charlton, 1959-1964, 1978-1979)
Charlton
Series becomes Fightin’ Five after issue #27, returns with issue #28 in 1978

Space War was an anthology title, with each issue consisting of several different short stories. These were of the time-honored “surprise/ironic ending” type, set against the backdrop of space. Since each story had just eight pages, the tales often read more like concepts than fiction such as “An ‘Anywhere Machine’ that can take its riders to anyplace in space or time: the passengers desire to go to Heaven, but are tricked into going to Hell instead.”

In its original form, Space War ran for some 27 issues in the late 1950s before changing its name to Fightin’ 5. The original series resurfaced in 1978 during Charlton’s “reprint years,” consisting entirely of old (though generally interesting) stories. This second run succeeded in squeezing out only a few more issues before the series concluded for good.
