Harley Quinn: Our Worlds at War
(DC, 2001)
™ and ©2001 DC Comics
As aliens attack the earth, Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen finds himself crash-landed in Gotham City. There, he is mistaken for an enemy alien and finds himself running from a mob…and right into the arms of the Joker’s girlfriend. To avoid being killed by the psychopathic Harley Quinn, Olsen makes up an outlandish tale about needing to get back to Metropolis to be reunited with his lost love (in fact, the cub reporter’s brain contains information vital to the earth’s survival). Harley, always a sucker for a romantic sob story, gives Olsen a lift in the Jokermobile. What follows is one of the craziest road-trips in the history of DC Comics as Olsen and Quinn run afoul of aliens at a Midway City gas station, escape the clutches of the villainous Henchmen (all former cronies of major Bat-villains) and find themselves in a fight to the death against demi-gods from Apokolips. This much-needed moment of levity amidst all the doom and gloom of the “Worlds at War” saga comes courtesy of writer Karl Kesel (Superman), and artists Paul Grist (St. Swithin’s Day) and Paul Chadwick (Concrete), among others.
