Narcolepsy Dreams
(Slave Labor, 1994-1995)
™ and ©1995 Slave Labor Graphics
Narcolepsy Dreams features short stories written and drawn by Jaime Crespo.
As examples of Crespo’s work, “Up and Down Career” tells the story of a boy’s quest to become a yo-yo champion, until the day he meets the reigning star at the local drugstore.
“Sleepwalk” is told from the point of view of the skull-headed Ruben, a five-dollar-an-hour wage slave who cleans a ratty hotel and its restrooms. When Ruben and his horned partner Ajax must remove a deranged homeless man from the roof of the building, life takes an inexplicable turn.
Finally, in “Hell Bent, Heaven Sent” a mentally retarded man on a playground swing set teaches the artist that angels may turn up in the most unlikely places.
Filled with vignettes from urban life based on adult and childhood experiences, these stories explore the strangeness and poignancy of everyday life in the big city from a surrealistic point of view.
