An ancient Egyptian wizard gave newsboy Billy Batson the power to transform himself into the world’s mightiest mortal by uttering his magical name, Shazam! As Captain Marvel, he had a hugely successful career during comics’ Golden Age and helped keep the world safe from villains like the evil scientist Dr. Sivana and the worm from outer space, Mr. Mind.

C.C. Beck’s good-humored Captain debuted in the first issue of Whiz Comics in 1940, and quickly moved into his own series in 1941. Loose, funny, and filled with memorable characters and great stories, Captain Marvel was one of the most significant comic book series ever created. During the 1940s, his popularity rivaled that of Superman, which prompted DC to sue Fawcett for copyright infringement. A consent decree finally put Captain Marvel out of action in 1953. DC bought the rights and later revived the character as Shazam!
