In this manga version of the anime series, the Earth again faces invaders from outer space. This time, Shun Ukiya is the fortunate high-schooler who realizes that he really isn’t a normal kid after all, but the super-powered savior of humanity.

Out of nowhere, a suit-wearing slayer appears, toting a submachine gun to assassinate Shun. Luckily, the Earth is defended by the secret agency AEGIS, who employs paranormally empowered teens known as “Gatekeepers.” Opening portals into other dimensions, can Shun and his girlfriends defeat more invaders, the sinister Reiji Kageyama, and the resurrected cyborg Commander Seigfried?

This print adaptation moves quickly to spell out its familiar premise—teen-ager saves humanity from villainous ET’s—and introduces its cast of perky characters. The drawing is conventional and the scripting adequate. Both are sufficient to please fans of the animation, but not compelling enough to carve out a unique comics identity.
