Zip Comics
(M.L.J., 1940-1947)
™ and © MLJ Magazines
Zip Comics was the showcase for Steel Sterling, a typical golden age costumed adventurer whose exploits gained power from the dynamic artwork of Irv Novick. Other MLJ stalwarts including The Web, Nevada Jones and Black Jack also appeared in its pages. Indeed, the standard of art in most MLJ titles was better than average for the 1940s, even down to the backup features. Zip Comics included “The Slap-Happy Applejacks” (hillbilly humor), Señor Banana (racist Mexican humor, though well drawn), Chimpy (funny animals drawn in a Will Eisner style!), and Ginger (girl-oriented teen humor). The Red Rube, a humorous takeoff on Captain Marvel who gained the powers of everyone in history ever named Rueben by uttering the words “Hey Rube!” made his debut in issue #39.
