Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Celebrity super-heroes The Fantastic Four, recipients of super-powers thanks to cosmic rays, bicker amongst themselves but pull together, when their arch-nemesis, Doctor Doom, threatens New York City.

Marvel keeps attempting to market its characters to kids and it’s to be hoped that this attempt will be more of a hit than its last retelling of classic stories, which featured lackluster story and art. Because, as launches go, this is darn good. Clearly, from the revised uniforms (and Doctor Doom wearing slacks!), this is the movie version of the team, and the minimalist but effective script does a good job introducing them. Moreover, the strong art would be welcome on the regular F.F. series.

The only trick will be keeping up this high level of quality month after month. Otherwise, with its glossier-than-usual cover stock and the free “variant rare” Spider-Man trading game card, it’s an attractive package that’ll be sure to appeals to kids. It’s just a pity Marvel couldn’t have given this away on Free Comic Book Day.
