Captain Planet and the Planeteers was adapted almost verbatim from the Saturday morning cartoon series by the same name. Its stars are five kids from around the globe, who are given power rings by Gaia (“Mother Earth” herself) so that they can defend the planet from polluters.

Each ring gives its bearer control of one of the classic elements of earth, wind, water, and fire. The last ring, given to the Indian boy Ma-Ti, has the power of “heart,” linking the others together through telepathy. When the rings are used together, they also have the power to summon Captain Planet, a super-hero for the planet. Together, Captain Planet and the young “Planeteers” fight to save the Earth from villains such as the pig-like “Hoggish Greedly” whose schemes have included strip-mining wildlife sanctuaries and shooting trash into space.
