Galaxy Angel
(Broccoli, 2004-2005)
™ and © Broccoli, ™ and © 2004 Kanan
When this Broccoli book declares itself “deluxe,” it’s not kidding. For the same price as a regular manga volume, Galaxy Angel is printed on much better paper and is bound better. With a sizable chunk of story, the contents include color pages, helpful text pages that explore the back story and characters, translator notes, and, of course, ads for all the cool ancillary GA merchandise you can buy.
About the actual story: It concerns the galaxy’s fastest starship and its all-cute girl crew who have unusual ideas when it comes to uniforms. (Especially Captain Forte Stollen, who somehow manages to accessorize lingerie with a monocle.)
It’s a typical uneasy blend of space opera and comedy on the same level as Tenchi Muyo, but without the strong characters. But, as silly and flimsy as it may be, it’s also pretty and so desperate to please that it’s easy to excuse its excesses.
— S.A. Bennett
