Levi’s World

The original Moordam Comics run of the bizarre, quirky Levi’s World had a tiny but devoted following when it was published five years ago. Unfortunately, its intended six-issue run ended prematurely, and the final two chapters remained unseen until Comic Library International collected the entire story in this volume.
Krause has a strange but oddly charming sense of humor, somewhere between the delight of Jeff Smith or Jay Hosler and the dryness of James Kochalka or Chris Yambar. And Levi’s World, both the story and the setting, has a delightful charm of its own. His world is one full of creatures like Beoples and Doats and Tords, a world where anything can and does happen, a world without time or reason: a virtual paradise, yet one fraught with danger.

Krause’s art is equally contradictory; his character designs and line work are simple and almost primitive, but page after page is a Where’s Waldo array of nonsensical yet funny gags and jokes. Rather than give themselves eyestrain, readers would be better off saving a lot of the detail for a second reading.

But this is the charm of the book; there’s so much to like and discover that it would be nigh impossible not to enjoy it. New fans get a ton of funny for their money, and long-time fans get to see how it ends. No one loses.
