The Ring of the Nibelung (Vol. 4)

™ and ©2000, 2001 P. Craig Russell

The classical hero Siegfried bids goodbye to his true love Brunhilde, the former Valkyrie. But before he goes into the world, he leaves her with a memento of his devotion, a golden ring. And she in turn bequeaths to him the mighty horse she once rode to escort the valiant dead to Valhalla. However, the schemes of petty and lustful men will doom this poignant farewell.

In 1848 the German composer, Richard Wagner, began writing his epic opera, “The Ring of the Nibelung.” Based on Norse mythology, the entire drama took twenty-five years to write and takes sixteen hours to perform. Adapting this sprawling saga to comics has been a goal of P. Craig Russell for over twenty years. Beginning with “The Rhinegold” then “The Valkyrie” and next “Siegfried”; “Gotterdammerung” is the fourth and final opera of the series, which totals fourteen issues. Craig Russell, who has illustrated everything from Batman to Oscar Wilde fairy tales, is more than capable to undertake such an ambitious and daunting project.
