The Punisher Meets Archie
(Marvel, 1994)
©1994 Marvel Entertainment Group and Archie Comic Publications, Inc.
It’s the crossover they said could never happen. The Punisher, Marvel’s grim ‘n’ gritty vigilante, was on the track of a villain who had escaped to Riverdale, all-American town and home to Archie Andrews. The villain, a two-bit mobster named “Red” Fever was a virtual double for Archie, causing no end of trouble for all involved. Eventually the Punisher gets his man, Archie gets out of trouble, and Riverdale reverts to its old self. Next stop for the Punisher: Gotham City (for the Batman/Punisher: Lake of Fire crossover).
This improbable crossover is really a remarkable piece of work, largely because of the talents of writer Batton Lash (Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre). All the characters stay true to themselves and to their genres while at the same time joining up to tell what from the Punisher’s perspective is a gritty manhunt, and what from the Archie side is another wacky adventure.
This special was punished both as “Archie Meets the Punisher” and a die-cut “Punisher Meets Archie” with identical contents.
