This special wraps up the Onslaught saga, Marvel’s grand crossover event of 1997. Professor Xavier, now no longer Onslaught, has willfully turned himself over to the government. Unfortunately, he was turned over to the not-so-tender mercies of Bastion, the mutant-hater who seemed personally determined to break the professor down. Exercising complete control of the secret Hulkbuster base, Bastion had turned it into a death camp, with the bodies of his prisoners routinely thrown in the garbage after Bastion had ordered them killed.

In an act of hope and penance, Xavier rose above his own situation to save the life of a fellow prisoner: a mutant girl with incredible psychic powers—but one who would join the ranks of the missing and the dead if not for his help.
