The 1960s comics renaissance known as the Silver Age came late to third-string publisher Charlton, and lasted only until the departure of innovative editor Dick Giordano in 1968. But during that brief flicker of creativity, Charlton produced a few titles that are recognizable as credible super-hero efforts.

At the bottom of that list is Judomaster, a simple-minded, martial arts, action series set during World War II. Judomaster is an American trained in the martial arts, set against vicious “Japs and Nazis” in flimsy stories designed to showcase plenty of fighting action. Written and drawn in obvious haste by the otherwise competent Frank McLaughlin, Judomaster folded after only a short run. In the 1980s, DC acquired the Charlton super-hero properties and Judomaster made an unlikely cameo appearance in the multiple-universe-collapsing epic mini-series Crisis On Infinite Earths.
