One of the major accomplishments of the Marvel Knights imprint has been the updating of several classic old Marvel super-heroes for the modern era. Here it’s the Black Panther, who previously had his own book in the late 1970s, getting the cool ‘90s spin. The Panther—known also as T’Challa, the mysterious King of Wakanda—must leave his civil-war-torn African nation to investigate a murder in New York City. His adventures in a very different kind of jungle in this series enmesh him in the affairs of various villains, both earthly and demonic. He also encounters former super-hero acquaintances, from both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four; and a cast of regulars that includes wildcard government agent Everett K. Ross, a man as quick with a sarcastic remark as a gun.

A team of name creators pitch in here, notably writer Christopher Priest and artist Mark Texeira, who lends his richly textured, realistic artwork to the first several issues.
