Starman: The Mist

    (DC, 1998)
™ and ©1998 DC Comics

The Black Hand kidnapped the Mist’s infant son to force her to steal a piece of technology from the military. She felt she had no choice but to comply and so used her mass-altering ability to procure the weapon just in time to be confronted by Captain Marvel (formerly known as Mary Marvel). The Mist and Mary Marvel are polar extremes: one a cunning, cynical villain; the other a naive, trusting hero. Writer James Robinson uses their divergent personalities to make this story more than a good-guy versus bad-guy clash.

The Mist is the daughter of the original Mist who was a foe of Ted Knight, the original Starman. She now plagues his son, Jack Knight, who has taken up the mantle of Starman. This stand-alone issue was part of Girlfrenzy Week in which DC published a group of titles accentuating female supporting characters including Donna Troy, Batgirl, and Lois Lane.
