G.I. Joe (Ziff-Davis)

    (Ziff-Davis, 1950-1957)

Not at all the souped-up, techno-toy series that Marvel would launch decades later, this original G.I. Joe title is a straightforward collection of adventure stories, starring U.S. soldiers.

Many of the stories in G.I. Joe star G.I.s living on bases in occupied Japan following World War II. Although there are many stories revolving around camp life or among the Japanese townsfolk, not many stories feature the out-and-out warfare that categorizes later war comics. Instead, you get stories of G.I.s breaking up smuggling rings or solving murders. A backup feature, The Yardbirds, is a comic humor feature reminiscent of Beetle Bailey.
